The Facts are...

Attention turns from kids to pets
Dogs fill in for children in lots of American families these days. Many boomers -- the generation with all the money in the U.S. -- are just about done with parenting. Their nests are feeling a little empty.

"People are spending more on their pets because of marketing, that's No. 1," says consumer-trend analyst Cheryl Russell of New Strategist Publications. "Also, people are more affluent. And the third reason is that the boomers are so used to pampering their children . . . so that when their children are gone they turn all that attention to their pets."

The latest spending figures show that between 2007 and 2008 household spending on pets increased 18% after inflation while toy sales dropped 25%, spending on day-care centers fell 15%, and spending on children's clothes was down 15%.

Megan Rice, a Seattle teacher says , they treated their Rhodesian Ridgeback, Gus, like a child. Once she bought Gus a $100 raincoat, which he won't wear. They spent about $30 a month on toys and treats for him.

What cat doesn't love to be pampered? The market for cat pampering is amazing and unbelievable. Pet owners really treasure their feline friends and yearn to make their kitty's life as comfortable as possible. Some cats are treated like royalty.

Face it, you’ve been dreaming about it for years. The thought of owning your own business has probably kept you up at night. Who wouldn’t want to work for themselves and call the shots, right? Owning your own business is a dream come true for many – and there are plenty of benefits that go along with being your own boss.

  • One of the best advantages – and the one we probably don’t even have to mention! – is that going into business for yourself means being your own boss. There’s nobody looking over your shoulder or telling you what to do. Gone are the traditional office politics and cubicle living, and in their place is the freedom to make the decisions you alone believe are best for the growth and success of your business.

A great benefit to owning your own business is the number of options open to you as a potential business owner.

  • In this rough economy, many potential business owners are looking to franchising as a great way to achieve business ownership while benefiting from the proven business model, infrastructure and support of an established brand.

Spend more time with your family, take that trip around the world you always wanted… or even build another business!

Owning your own business also makes you a vital part of the community where you live, work and play. Did you know that, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration, small businesses create two of every three new jobs, produce 39% of the gross national product, and invent more than half the nation’s technological innovations? Imagine the possibilities and contributions you could make to your community!

Another advantage of business ownership....

  •  is the ability to control your own destiny. Large corporations can be adverse to change, while owning your own business can give you ability to make rapid decisions and implement course corrections when the economy dictates. In the ocean of business, mega-corporations turn like tankers, while small businesses have the speed and agility of a speedboat – something very important in our current economic climate.

As an employee you can dedicate years of your life to a company only to find yourself out of a job because of some dumb move made by the guys at the top.  A recession, management changes, mergers, acquisitions, downsizing and outsourcing all have a tendency to force sudden and unexpected change. However, if you own your own business, you’ll be facing today’s competition and change on your own terms.

You’ll be your own boss. Isn’t that a business benefit worth looking into?

One of the first objections that people have to starting their own business is that it will cost too much money. Unfortunately, these people are throwing the baby out with the bath water. Just because it costs some people a lot of money to start a business doesn't mean that this has to be the case for you. Now more than ever it is possible to start an online business with very little start up costs and even less maintenance costs. Thanks to the Internet, your online business can cost as little as a dinner out.

Considering the fact that brick and mortar business cost thousands to start and maintain, it's no wonder why many people think that owning your own business is expensive. The costs for starting an online business are minimal when compared to traditional brick and mortar businesses. There are a variety of different ways you can make money online.

If you are an employee, you have little control over your tax destiny. Starting your own small business could change that a lot.                                                          But here's a secret, you need to consult a good tax professional because if you start a legitimate business, even a small one, the new tax levers you'll get can really work to your advantage.                                                                             Why? Small business and entrepreneurship are part of the American dream, and Congress wants to help out.                                                                                Make no mistake -- their real hope and desire is that some of those small businesses become big ones that hire lots of people and generate more tax revenue down the road. Upshot: you might be surprised at what you, as business owner, can write off.                                                                                             Here's how it works. With a "Schedule C" business, named for the tax form used to account for it, all legitimate costs of doing business are fair game to be written off. A few examples: • business person a magazine subscription can be deducted. Or, as a weekend wedding photographer, Operating expenses and supplies. Anything purchased to help in your trade counts. As a you buy a ladder for better shooting angles. That counts too -- even if you also use it to remove leaves from your gutters.

Travel. Depending on your business, travel may be deductible. Attend a conference or meet with a client -- and take the family along. Write off your individual expenses -- and since you'll need a hotel and rental car whether you're one or four, the family shares in the subsidy.

Vehicles. It's hard to write off an entire vehicle, but you can take the mileage deduction, for legitimate business activities. Combine personal trips with that business purpose -- i.e. go to the post office and make other stops on the way, the whole trip counts. Ditto for that city trip to meet a client.

Home office. You need to do business somewhere, and if that somewhere is a separate room in your home you can deduct costs to outfit that room, plus a prorated portion of all home expenses. So if your office is 10% of your home and you spend $5,000 to repave the driveway, write off $500.

• Hire the kids. Your 12-year-old computer whiz could be a tax bonanza. Hire him or her to install software, back up computers or produce DVDs of your work. Pay a reasonable wage and expense it with no worries so long as the dependent's earned income stays under the standard deduction . Sweeping floors or other more traditional pursuits also qualify. And don't forget Grandma and other relatives -- their deductible wages also stay in the family. Now, a caution: none of this is automatic. You must be prepared to justify expenses. This means good record-keeping. Special rules for vehicles, home offices and other items require familiarity. You'll have to allocate business use of some items like computers. If you use a PC to invoice once a month, and Junior plays “XBox" the rest of the time, be careful.
And always, always consult a tax professional before taking any of these deductions.
